Cultural Studies from a Philosophical Perspective

Abstract

The philosophy of knowledge highlights the importance of the epistemic structure used to form an understanding of culture, including language, symbols, and narratives, which serve as mediums connecting human experience with cultural reality. This study aims to analyze the contribution of epistemological philosophy in providing a deeper framework for understanding the process of knowledge production in cultural studies and its role in comprehending the social construction of cultural reality. The research method used is qualitative, with a descriptive approach. The data source employed is secondary data, and the data collection technique is literature study. The data analysis method applied is content analysis. The research findings show that the contribution of epistemological philosophy in cultural studies lies in its ability to examine the process of knowledge production influenced by social, political, and historical dynamics. Epistemology bridges cultural relativism, which emphasizes diverse perspectives, with universalism, which seeks cross-cultural fundamental principles, while accommodating local values. This approach critiques the relationship between knowledge and power, including the impact of epistemological colonialism, which positions Western knowledge as the universal standard. Philosophy strengthens the understanding of the social construction of cultural reality through the analysis of language, symbols, and critical theory, while creating space for an inclusive and sustainable cultural reality.
